Where I bought my first home: Oak Street and serious value.
This is where I bought my first home, and where I lived during college on Oak Street, so I know it the way you only know a neighborhood when you've actually been part of it. It has a mix that's rare in New Orleans: students and young professionals alongside longtime families, all sharing the same blocks.
Oak Street is the anchor. Oak and Ale, Blue Cypress Books, Breads on Oak, Jacquimos, the Maple Leaf for live music, multiple coffee shops. Everything you need on one walkable stretch. Maple Street runs nearby with its own energy: Shug's Bagels, Chaise De la Chaise, Reds Bar, Fresco, Gae Tanas. And the surrounding streets, Carrollton Avenue beyond, add even more. A few of my favorites include Luca Eats, Camellia Grill, Panola Street Cafe, and Lebanons. The Carrollton streetcar line connects you straight downtown.
For first-time buyers and house-hackers especially, this neighborhood deserves serious consideration. The price point is more accessible than most of Uptown, the rental demand is strong thanks to university proximity, and the quality of life is genuinely high. It's where I started building, and I'd point a lot of my clients here without hesitation.
